What is Vietnamese Yogurt Coffee (Sua Chua Cafe)?

You probably think yogurt and coffee don’t go well together and what a strange idea to combine them. Believe me, this is a very popular and addictive Vietnamese drink and perhaps my most favorite coffee drink.

Sua Chua Cafe is made by simply mixing together yogurt and Vietnamese coffee, and the result is a drink so much more interesting than yogurt or coffee alone.

The yogurt provides tartness, creaminess and richness while the Vietnamese coffee provides intensity and aroma with a chocolate note. Contrasting flavors complement each other to create a fantastic drink that gives you your caffeine fix as well as health benefits from yogurt.

Ingredients

A glass of Vietnamese Yogurt Coffee (Sua Chua Cafe)

To make Vietnamese Yogurt Coffee, you need just a handful of ingredients:

  • plain yogurt,
  • sweetened condensed milk,
  • Vietnamese ground coffee, and
  • crushed ice.

I like to use Greek yogurt because it has a thick consistency. Therefore, when we add ice, the drink won’t become too liquidy. You can use any yogurt you like, just make sure it’s plain yogurt.

For sweetened condensed milk, any brands you can find in your local grocery stores will work. In Vietnam, Longevity brand is like the household name :).

Ingredients and tools to make Vietnamese coffee (cafe sua nong): phin filter, ground coffee and sweetened condensed milk.

With regard to Vietnamese coffee, you can find detailed information about Vietnamese ground coffee in my Vietnamese coffee recipe post. Our favorite is Trung Nguyen Legendee Gold Creative 8 brand. If you visit Vietnam, I strongly recommend coffee blends from Cau Dat farm brand.

You can buy Trung Nguyen brand coffee at Asian grocery stores or on Amazon. A lot of Vietnamese families in the US. like to use Cafe Du Monde ground coffee.

Summary of What I Used to Make this Drink

  • Trung Nguyen Creative 8 Ground Coffee: this is the only coffee blend from Trung Nguyen we use. Other Trung Nguyen blends are not as good as this one.
  • Vietnamese phin coffee filter: I brought mine from Vietnam, but you can easily find one on Amazon.
  • Longevity sweetened condensed milk
  • Cuisinart stainless steel electric kettle: good for boiling water to make coffee or tea since you can select the appropriate temperature.
  • Bormioli Rocco romantic water glass: I often get asked where I got the glasses in the photo, so here’s the link on Amazon to purchase them. You can also find them on Sur La Table. They are pretty and very affordable.
